Apples For Gut Health

My orchard is overflowing with apples at the moment and this is an easy recipe to use them up and benefit your gut health.

I generally think we eat too much fruit, especially fruit which is not in season or from the UK. But this time of year apples are in plentiful supply and organic apples are easy to find.

The humble apple has been found to lower inflammatory markers, improve gastrointestinal function, support weight loss and change intestinal bacterial to improve digestive and eliminative function.

I add cinnamon to the apples as it's the perfect warming spice for the autumn with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Before serving I stir in a teaspoon per person of coconut oil or ghee to slow down the blood sugar release and add much needed fat to our diet.

Recipe

  • 6 apples (preferably organic)

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 2 tsp cinnamon

Directions

Peel and core the apples (I often leave half the skin on for additional fibre) and chop them into small, evenly sized pieces.

Put all the ingredients in a covered pan and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring regularly.

Cook until soft.

Can be eaten warm or cold and will last in the fridge for a couple of days.

Some of you may know I am getting married in a couple of weeks and we are taking our children on honeymoon with us to Iceland. I will be out of the clinic from Wednesday 19th October to Monday 31st October. Please let me know if there is anything you need before I go and Lisa and Georgia will be in the office to help you when I am away,

Debbie
